Fragile X Syndrome - Two Research Projects

Project 1

Early visual and attention processing in young boys with fragile X syndrome.

This study is funded by Canadian Institutes of Health Research and is beginning the journey to chart the early visual and attention trajectory of Fragile X boys as young as five years of age. This research project is also longitudinal and we will be testing the same boys on three occasions to see how their visual and attention skills develop over time. We are using state-of-the-art computers games that help us track any critical changes in development up to 12 years of age.

Project 2

Fragile X and Autism

This study is funded by Canadian Institutes of Health Researchand will examine the difference and similarities in the perceptual signatures of children with Fragile X syndrome and a dual diagnosis of Autism and children with Autism or Fragile alone.

This knowledge will significantly facilitate our understanding of how the Fragile X pathways (neural and cognitive) may be implicated in autism, and will help to prevent misdiagnosis that can result in inappropriate remediation (clinical and academic) that fails to target an affected child's syndrome specific strengths and difficulties.
